Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is a seaside town nestled on the coast of Broward County, Florida. There is much history to be told about this quaint little town. Its roots can be traced back to the early 1920’s when a developer named William Morang purchase the land. He plotted it but nothing was built and then sold to real estate investor Melvin Anglin. When Melvin bought the land it was with the intention of building a small seaside community. Anglin actually became the Lauderdale-By-The-Sea’s first Mayor. There was political problem occurring that stopped the town’s incorporation until about 1947. In 1960 the population was about 1,300 and that number doubled by 2001. Luckily there were height restrictions for building, which were put into place so Lauderdale-By-The-Sea could keep it small seaside town charm.
Lauderdale-By-The-Sea actually has a living coral reef just 100 yards off the beach. It’s great because you don’t need a boat to get out there to snorkel. Coral reefs are a big tourist attraction for people from all over the world. Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is also the nesting site for Loggerhead Sea Turtles. It’s the largest nesting site in the Western Hemisphere and they are fiercely protected by our government agency due to their recent decrease in population. There are many great little shops to get all kind of beach gifts for the ones you left at home. There are some very good restaurants like Village Pump, Ocean 101, and the Commercial Pier Diner and right on the beach is Aruba which has a beautiful view and live music almost every night. The Commercial Pier is great for fishing or just taking a leisurely walk and soak up the amazing view. There are also two churches…One is the Assumption Catholic Church and the other is The Community Church.
